"O pirilampo" is a Portuguese adaptation of the traditional Japanese song "Hotaru Koi". This song has different versions, ranging from a simple version with just one stanza, usually performed by children, to one with a complex and more challenging choral arrangement for young people and adults written by Roh Ogura. Its interpretation in canon, in a game of vocal imitation, is intended to represent the flight of these luminescent insects.
In Japanese folklore, fireflies are a metaphor for love and passion and their mysterious lights are the altered form of the souls of soldiers who have died in battle.
